On April 30, 1970, Hunter S. Thompson descended upon his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, with the intention of covering the city’s preeminent event. Instead of churning out a vanilla story about a horse race for Scanlan’s Monthly, Hunter produced the drug-addled, booze-soaked romp “The Kentucky Derby Is Decadent and Depraved.” The trip introduced him to his long-time collaborator and illustrator, Ralph Steadman; cemented him as a figurehead of the counterculture movement; and birthed his signature style of Gonzo journalism. Just like Hunter’s writing, this juice is uncut and unfiltered, with just enough burn to keep you coming back for more. This is Gonzo Whiskey!
